Hong Kong Museums – There are a number of museums in the city itself and Tsin Sha Tsui that are educational and offer some respite from the summer heat, particularly if the kids are complaining. On public holidays, museums adopt Sunday opening hours and most are closed over Christmas and the Chinese New Year (January or February). Most museums are free on Wednesdays and if you are keen on visiting a number of them then you’d be wise to buy a one week visitors pass that provides unlimited admission into the Museum of Art, Museum of History, Science Museum, Space Museum. Heritage Museum and the Museum of Coastal Defence. Buy from the museums themselves or from any tourist office.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Displays of art, music and historical artefacts, all housed in a compound of buildings arranged around a central courtyard, that documents the evolution of culture in Hong Kong. Admission HK$10.

Sam Tung UK Museum

Declared a national monument after the residents moved out, this fascinating restored eighteenth century Hakka village tells the story of it’s past and restoration through displays and exhibitions.

The University Museum and Art Gallery
94, Bonham Road

Opening hours – Mon-Sat, 9.30am-6pm; Sun, 1.30pm – 5.30pm.
Highlights of this excellent museum include Nestorian bronze crosses that are relics from the Yuan Dynasty as well as a large collection of ceramics, woodcarvings and paintings. Admission is free.

Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defense
175 Tung Hei Road, Shau Kei Wan

Opening hours – Mon-Wed, Fri-Sun 10am-5pm.
Inside the museum there are some educational displays including a collection of opium pipes and some moving letters composed by Prisoners of War. Outside, follow the trail past British tanks, torpedoes and various other battle relics. Admission is HK$10.

Museum of History

A detailed look at Hong Kong’s colourful history from prehistoric times through to the present day. Admission is HK$10.

Hong Kong Space Museum
10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Opening hours – Mon, Wed-Fri; 1pm-9pm, Sat & Sun, public holidays; 10am-9pm.
Ideal for children, budding astronauts can watch films in the IMAX space theatre seven times a day. Check with the museum for viewing times. Admission to exhibition halls HK$10, FOR THE Space Theatre HK$24-32.
