HONG KONG THEATRE

Hong Kong Theatres – Hong Kong has some excellent productions ranging from locally-based dramatic groups to international touring companies. Western and Chinese dance productions are particularly good, especially as you don’t have to worry about the production being in Cantonese! Plays tend to be subsidised by the government, making tickets extremely good value with tickets for smaller productions costing HK$50-120 and larger ones costing HK$250-800. Tickets can be purchased from the theatres themselves or from the telephone booking agency Ticketek HK (telephone, 3128 8288) or URBTIX (telephone, 2734 9009) and there is a HK$5 booking fee if you contact them. Keep an eye out for the free concerts and music festivals that take place throughout the year, such as the Academy of Performing Arts students who put on regular free concerts, and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre has a ‘musical happy hour’ on Thursdays from 6pm-7pm where tickets can be bought cheaply.
